Yazmine, Leiilia, Valentina, Osama, Daniel, Sonia and the others are great. They are inquisitive, excited and just as rowdy as the kids I love back home. They play sports, chill with their friends, have Facebook pages and are your average teens. They smoke hash, drink alcohol and are sexually active just like the kids I love at home. The school system is very interesting in that the structure is so different from ours. There are 4 required years and that is Kindergarten, then 7th-9th with an optional year of 10th grade to either mature or boost your grades. From there they can go to Jr. College, Business Jr. College, Vocational school or something else and from there is College and it is all FREE.99

Tyra isn't a student in Denmark... she is apart of the delegation.

We have met a host of interesting people and had a good time as well. The two delegations on Integration have met up in the city of Copenhagen. It's the Danes and the Americans. We have had debates on race, education, explored best practices learned about one another's organizations. I have plenty of shots of the great spaces that "youngsters" in Denmark are learning in. We haven't always agreed or seen eye to eye but we have learned from one another and know we are in it for the kids. Some of the shots below are of the "grown folks" who work with the "youngsters" to guide them in the way of the future.

This is just a few more shots. I have learned how to say Chicken (cause I am black), excuse me/sorry, thank you, your welcome, yes, no and look out! The Danes have been most hospitable I would like to keep them in my pocket they are so great. This trip has been an interesting look at the way in which integration is shaping a new Danish society. The difficulties lie in the tradition and mindsets of the people.

Here are some shots of what I am dealing with as far as navigation. Some things are obvious others not so obvious.

The next installment will be funky city shots. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. This photo was taken at Millenium Park. This photo is one of my favorite. I love that so much is going on. The India family, the children playing in the water and the face on the tower spraying water construct a really interesting story.

I like this shot. The balance of earth and building. Apparently not to far from where I stood to take this shot was the fountain from Married with Children... I missed it though. The weather was quite lovely and it was just a perfect Saturday.

So at Millenium Park some water fun was planned and then again some wasn't. Which is evident in the baby with the cute little striped panties. I had an interaction today with one of the owners of Shawarma King on Columbia Rd. She said "even if you don't have the money we will not let you go hungry." I had it and gave her every last penny. She told me I had a good heart and for that I would be rewarded because in having a good heart you don't have to wory about being taken care of. You could sleep in the woods and be safe. I have spoken with her before and have enjoyed our interaction then as well.

This past weekend I was in Chicago for the NCLR Conference. I was actually there for two meetings held at the conference. Being in Chicago was a wonderful experience. It was nice to get away. Normally I like having someone to share my experience with but this was a welcome change. I had forgotten what it was like to be on your own in a place that you are unfamilar with. It takes me back to my days at Howard, learning the campus and gradually making friends. Knowing a few people here and there but still striking out in unknown territory. I had fun getting to know the Loop, learning the bus system and $2.85 cab rides to the next block. (long story... funny but...) I was really happy to connect with LaQuis and Kamilah. It was also great to finally meet someone I have only spoken to via telephone, Tiffany Bullock, owner of House of Sole Shoe Boutique on S. Michigan Ave. She was great and her shop is wonderful! I love the items she carries! Makes me miss the now closed Wild Women Wear Red even more.

I tried to make sure I hit the reccomended spots like Giordano's Pizza, Harold's Chicken Shack and Garrett's popcorn and I did. They did not disappoint. Did I mention that it was just nice to be away from DC especially after this past post. I really just needed a break from all of the stupidity. I am sure it existed other ways in different cities but going to Chicago as a "tourist" allowed just the perfect time to escape.

I will most certainly go back to the Windy City and explore even more of the grand old city. I am super estatic that Obama is president, Michelle is the most beautiful First Lady to grace the white house with her presence but this city is so gutter it turns my stomach. I think travelling by bus gets to the underbelly of the city. It allows you to see the true grit. And DC is truly gritty. It certainly doesn't stop there. Camden is another destination this is not the glimmer in the eyes of your all American experience. Sadly it doesn't stop there. My voice today just felt like a lone voice in a desolete forrest.

INTERIOR U8 Bus to Capitol Heights

The Characters: Aimless youth, drunkin impaired, babies, adults and fools

The Scene: People load on to the bus like any ordinary day. There is a white man that is fiddling with papers who gets up and pulls the bell around 44th and Nannie Helen Burroughs. The drunkinly impaired man with the crutches decides that he needs to inform the white man that he was somehow wasting people's time and should have had his papers together an organized his stuff off the bus.

White Man:

(loudly)

I didn't ask you for no lecture man. I don't need no lecture from you...

Drunkinly Impaired:

(incoherently)

Mumble mumble mumble

Moves crutches to the side, rises slowly hobbling to his feet. bucks at white man

Bus Patrons:

Laughing, gasping

Yeah Get him. Awwww! Yeah

stand on bus chairs, swing from poles, jump off bus, call police

Lone bus patron:

(seriously)

This is not funny. This is not funny. Stop laughing! This is unbelievable. This is insane.

to the bus driver

Did you call the police? What happens?

Bus Driver:

I pushed the button. What else do you want me to do? There are the police right there do you want to get them?

911 Operator:

911 emergency do you need the police?

Lone bus patron:

Yes there is a fight?

911 Operator:

Where are you?

Lone bus patron:

44th and Nannie Helen Burroughs they are one the bus fighting...

This was my journey home. I was the lone bus patron saying "This is not funny." It was truly disheartening to see the reaction that the youth had to those two grown ass men fighting. Excitement! Arousal! Exuberation! Were it not for a couple of civil minded men on the bus who broke things up the drunkinly impaired man would have pulled a blade. There were about 5 police cars that arrived and about nine or so police who did absolutely nothing. The bus driver had to tell them to get the man who started it, Mr. Drunkinly Impaired Man, off the bus. Once he was removed patrons who had their right mind to get off the bus reboarded and we rode up the street. As soon as I got home I went to this site.

Techniques! My first one was similar to the one above. I was an experimentor sometime ago. Once someone brought something to my attention I was on it. "Have you ever shot slides?" Off I went to Penn Camera to get slide film and spend more money. I picked up the film then set up a date with my friend Andrea and shot. Some years later I fell into a Polaroid transfer workshop and the same slides I shot of Andrea were the ones I used for my Polaroid transfers. She had made a ring from a flower and turned to face the sun and I caught her in that instance and that was the image that I transfered. I love techniques that allow you to be hands - on. The end result is a renewed piece of artwork that has a life of it's own. It is rustic in a lot of ways in that it looks weathered and worn. It is an exciting process that gives me a sense of fullfillment because of the process itself. Check it out for yourself and create!

Today's Inspiration

I am a lover of SHOES and photography. When I saw today's inspiration it was the perfect mix of my two loves. I love the way the wedding dress hits just above the ankle to show off that beautiful shoe and the thick wooden heel is the perfect contrast with the beautifully manicured lawn. The waves and curls in the petticoat are gorgeous and just add more rich texture to the image. I think that is what I like the most about this shot, the texture, it is so alive. This is my inspiration for the day. I hope it inspires you as well.

Kudos to the photographer who ever it is! Never really liked bugs. Don't really like getting all dirty and grimy. Put me by a window or on a screened porch though and I am fine.

Last week my auntie texted me and asked if I want to attend a cookout her sister (my other aunt of course) was having. I agreed. So my Memorial Day weekend was spent in Deleware with my estranged family. I love my aunties to pieces. They are funny, intelligent, family oriented women. Between the two of them I have five cousins four of whom I got to spend time with over the weekend. My mother's uncles don't have any children so I was the only grandchild. I am use to a compact family. I stayed the night in Deleware where this morning I counted 7 wash clothes in the bathroom for the household. That did not include the 3 overnight guests that included myself my other auntie and my cousin. The experience was a little surreal.

I think that I may have been a bit nervous and I know that I had to stop myself from tearing up several times. Especially, talking to Mr. Collins, who is my paternal grandfather, because I miss my pop-pop so much (my mommy's father). Hearing Mr. Collins talk about the war and his military travels made me think of him and his stories. Mr. Collins told me about a time when the word "MF" cost him $500. To this day he doesn't like the word. It was fun seeing where I could possibly get my "idiosyncrasies". Like both of my aunts sleeping with the fan on just like I do. I like the sound of the motor because it puts me to sleep. My cousin Danielle and I had the same toe nail color. (more of a coincendence than anything else, i know.) My Auntie Cheryl swears that I look like her mother. My father enjoys taking pictures too. "Look she is definitely Michael's daughter. Look at all the pictures she took."

I am the oldest of the neices and nephews by about ten years. Because my mother and father didn't really work out I missed out on having little cousins to babysit or tease and this weekend confirmed that. It just felt so comfortable to be there and it was hard because it still felt like I was on the outside. Alot of time has been lost. I missed the bumps and bruises, laughs and nicknames... and the reason behind those nicknames.

My father and I have yet to have a real conversation about anything since the funeral last year (his mother). I mean a cookout with a whole rack of cousins isn't really the best place to have the convo we need to have. Some parts of me is glad that we couldn't other parts want to scream "What's wrong with you man?!"

Sometimes I think about the way in which things are connected to determined how things could be disconnected. Being connected to my mother and disconnected from my father caused a disconnect from my aunts and cousins. Obvious though right. I wonder how could they live without me... how could he live without me? I have the feeling that my father is proud of me. I mean I am a polite, charming, attractive young lady. I was raised to respect myself as well as my elders. I am not on drugs... I mean there is a whole list of things I suppose. All of that I attribute to my mother and maternal grandparents. I am still waiting to give my father credit for something. In the pictures we took yesterday I was searching for my face in his. I was looking for the connection, for the me in him. In every picture of me there were teeth. Partially because my aunts kept me in stitches and partially because if I stopped laughing I probably would have started to cry. I think he is still trying to live up to his nickname Cockoman. He got it because he was so arrogant and cocky when he was younger. One of the only "stories" I know about him.

I am hestitant to post this blog. I mean I mainly post about art in some way shape or form or at least I try. Sharing the craziness that is my life within the last couple of posts is a little weird. I guess it fits under the catergory of commentary and these are certainly my life and times.

Unconventional Ideas

So I stumbled upon Ted.com, Can really remember how but I travel there daily to learn something new or hear a story and laugh a bit. The author of The Tipping Point Malcolm Gladwell presented this piece. I enjoy talks like this one. The phone is on quiet, there are magazines everywhere, I am still in pajamas and I have my scissors, posterboard and markers at the ready.

Last weekend a phone conversation with Ms. Tracey D. Rose, writer/producer/filmmaker/activist/femi-womanist/diva herself got me thinking about the way things are and how or rather what they could/should be. That phone call along with Ted, World Domination, a new notebook (always gets my mind to thinking) and a blog from my friend in LA-LA land has me in limbo with my goals and ideas about my future. As always my daily grind has impeded my thoughts about what I should be doing in this life.

So today what I am doing is a Vision Board. I looked at my last one and most of the things on it I have received. "Ask and it shall be given"... right? I ain't be askin lately my mind has been elsewhere. Tracey told me about the 100 Day Challenge and I found Bellavie.

She is a participant in the challenge as well as a motivation coach who recorded several days of her challenge. I still am not sure what season she or any one else is on in the 100 Day Challenge but I was really captured by the idea.

No I haven't begun 100 days of anything yet. If so this would be my first season and I would know at least what season that I am on. I just want to be consistant if I start it. So baby steps right? Thus today is Vision Board Day. Pandora is blazing and my scissors are (about to be) cutting up a storm (as soon as I post this blog about it.) Check out the links the internet is such a vast world of links and more links and there are some really cool things in that world. Ok I am off to be in a Vision.

Latest Designs and Events of Clients!

Photography Policy

So... I take photos. I started in high school. I have told the story before but maybe you haven't heard it. (or read it) I went to a Catholic high school that was majority white, latino and lastly black. My friends were a mix of blacks, latinos and then white. I decided to borrow my grandmother's camera to take pictures of my "crew" because we were grossly under respresented in the year book. I bought some black and white film (didn't know a thing about it) and started shooting. Because I didn't have the knowledge at the time the technical quality of the photographs were lacking. I didn't show those first shots to many folks. (hmmm anybody really) But it made me realize that I wanted to continue with photography and art in general. As an elective I took Art when everyone else took typing. My family realized that I was an artist early on and encouraged me but supporting my habit! With that said... Here is what I strive for as an artist.

Mission
*sondai expressions* is a mainstay for quality, creative and honest photography and design. We take the development and conception of each design seriously using our creative edge and unique visual perspective to make a visually pleasing product that both our clients and our company is proud of!

Photo philosophy
Nothing in life is perfect. That is the premise of my photography, if a hair is out of place that was the moment. I view photography as a documentation of time. Wrinkles, lint, wind tossed hair are all the honesty of the moment. My focus is on the connection of the subject and the lens. Having been on both sides of the camera I know how intimidating the eye of the lens can be. I promote a light atmosphere where comfort level is a high priority. My goal is to provide an image that captures the truth of the subject.

!!POP!!

kicks by Kimberly C. For the past two weeks I have been trying to get my students to create Pop Art pieces in the vain of Mr. Warhol himself. And for the most part they have been on board. It all stemmed from Sole of the City creator Mark D. Shelton II. I have to give credit where it is due. Mark found an online tutorial and it took off from there! I learned the techniques and passed it on to my young people. One of my students in turn asked "Hey Kim can you teach us...? " He noticed a line art piece in conjunction with the Pop Art tutorial. So the next thing I know I am learning the tedious and addictive ways of Line Art. So far I have created two pieces. Whew! It is fun, frustrating and like I said addictive. I think tomorrow I will post a Line Art gallery (which will consist of the two pieces I created hahahaha). The work my students are doing will be exhibited in June during our June Showcase. I will keep you posted on the haps with that.

Tracey D. I need to tell you so many things. Life collects a lot of memories in such a short amount of time. Where do I begin? I am somewhat disappointed at the result of the Dream Assignment. Many people told me that they were having a rough time trying to log on to vote for me. I am not sure what the meaning of that was but... I do thank those who both tried and who actually got through. The Dream is still alive we will just need alternative means in which to live it out. Life still continues! There are many more projects coming up the hill.

The Women Artists/ Women Healing panel and exhibition was DOPE! I also got some good shots that I will be posting SOON! (by the by... my computer crashed and I am on borrowed computers here and there so... soon... soon) I am making moves to cohesively compile all of the social networks that I am networked with, into ONE hub of networking. I am determined to keep up and keep in contact! So... yes you can follow me on twitter... www.twitter.com/sondaiexpress I am on facebook, myspace and an officer of the ning http://theartofphotography.ning.com I also belong to:

Sojournals.com

Coopr8

Acension Art

LinkedIn

Myspace

and probably some more...

NYC +

So the NYC trip was GREAT lunch with the ladies of Zenzele was much needed and time with T. Rose was inspiring! The Brooklyn Photography Salon was inspiring as well! Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe was the perfect finale to my weekend trip. She started a conversation on visual literacy in young people which I thought was wonderful. I truly believe our young people do not know just how to decipher all that they see so in turn they are creating a definition themselves. Which is of course inevitable. Adaptation is human's strongest trait and our young people are no exception. I am excited to have some of my students jump on board in the creation of Pop Art. They are excited about it as well and they keep at it mistakes are corrected and they keep going. I believe we will have a good body of work to show soon.

CentroNia's Saturday Arts Academy

"Time keeps on slippin' into the future..." May is almost here and my girls are working on their portraits/triptychs for our final show and garden party. I do wish we had more time to cover more topics and go more places to shoot. Young budding photographers are wonderful to see.

Well that is a tidbit of my Goddess world right now. I will have visual aids to come soon. *sigh*

Pic Me... Pic Me!

I did it... Finally! Thanks to Tracey and Vickey for suggestions and editing and to Mark for the support and lending an ear! So here it is my dream assignment. There are a lot of places that I want to go in the world and a few are incorporated into this idea. To achieve the goal I need the help of everyone I have EVER met to make this a reality... Hmmmm... let me change that. It is a reality because I am going to do this... I just need the help of a "few good friends" to do it this way. I am truly excited and GRATEFUL for this opportunity. The biggest step is not being afraid to put yourself out there. This idea has been on a dusty self for so long for so many reasons... or rather so many excuses. Now it is out and the Universe knows my intention... and So it is!

So here is where you come in... Click the link below... Sign up... Read my Dream Assignment and PIC ME! YAY! All month there are great exhibits, panels, performances all throughout the city and the coast! Be sure to check them out. I will definitely be participating in a few! In fact...

The Women Artists/ Women Healing Panel Series starts today, Tuesday at CentroNia. This Tuesday night series will be informative and a beautiful way to celebrate Women's Herstory Month. As an artist, therapy is a great benefit of creation. For some time my work was stagnant which in turn meant I was depressed and melancholy. Art is such a release. It helped put me back in balance with what I am here to do and that is create. It is a wonderful way to calm your mind body and spirit. Creation for yourself and creation for others are two different things... balance must always abound. The women participating in this panel have had a breath of experiences that will speak to that balance.

You can catch my work making appearances on the March 24th panel Psyche’s Pain: The Struggle for Psychic Renewal/Rebirth & the March 31st panel The Fragile Body: Restoring Health and Healing

The March 31st panel will include Andrea Thompson, from Daughter of Waters. Andrea and I collaborated on a body image project for an exhibition in NY some time ago and we will be presenting it on this panel. Rather Andrea will be on the panel... Imma just show the work. I will also have images from my heart monitor series as well.

Before I forget...

Tune in to WPFW all month long for Women's Herstory Month and International Women's Day (March 8th) There will be unique and informative programming related to women all month. Closing out the month will be a LIVE broadcast roundtable on International Music, Folk, Jazz / Blues and Women in Production sponsored by Sophies' Parlor featuring performances from a host of local women musicians. I am engineering that one so it should be an experience.

Whew... that was a mouthful... Stay tuned though because that isn't everything. I will let these plates digest a bit first.

Blessings! Holla!

"I Use to Feel So Uninspired..."

Greetings Gods and Goddesses!

Whew I had a moment last week. I was allowing a host of negative thoughts to permeate this good thing I got going. Yuk! BUT THEN... Corcoran heard my melancholy shuffle and sent me a little package in the mail. It was funkily striped and coolfully cutout and it gave me the inspiration for this work in progress...

I was also lead to create this...

I have been really immersing myself in various creative projects.
